About Your Retreat Leader

Cara has over 25 years of hands-on experience in permaculture design, natural growing, and regenerative living. Originally from the UK, she has designed projects in Hawaii, India, and Europe, and is now developing a permaculture village in Bosnia.

Her teaching style is practical, relaxed, and deeply experiential. You will learn by observing, designing, doing, and reflecting - gaining confidence to apply permaculture in any space, anywhere.

Foraging & Food with Peter (Chippy) Grant

Our guest chef Peter (Chippy) Grant (@thegathererwild) brings wild food, creativity, and seasonal magic to every meal. Expect vibrant vegetarian dishes using wild herbs and edible plants, mountain vegetables and seasonal fruits, heritage grains and traditional breads, and fermented or slow-prepared foods.

Peter will lead foraging walks, teach plant identification and ethical harvesting, and show you how wild foods can shine in simple, nourishing meals.

Cook With the Chef

Participants are warmly invited to join Peter in the kitchen, learning techniques, flavour ideas, and fermentation tricks. At the end of the retreat, Peter will create a special recipe booklet featuring dishes from the week so you can recreate them at home.

White Swallow Lodge

The Perfect Spot for Community Meals and Views

The heart of any community space White Swallow Lodge houses the kitchen facilities. Immediately in front is a large terrace where we often gather for community meals overlooking the permaculture gardens.

Chill Out Area

Relax and Unwind in the Chill Out Area

The Chill Out Area is an outdoor space for relaxing and taking it easy. In warmer weather it is shaded by sailcloths. It is also close to the firepit also situated in the same gardens.

Eagles View

A Stunning Spot for Outdoor Workshops

Eagles View is the highest point on the property and has the best view. It is situated above our natural springwater supply. It is a great space for outdoor workshops and practice.

Hazel Lodge

Discover Hazel Lodge: A Peaceful Workshop Setting

Hazel Lodge is our main indoor area for hosting workshops and retreat activities. It is situated away from the main accommodation and has a stunning view back down the valley.

Attic

The Attic: A Quiet Space for Reflection and Creativity

Whilst we encourage people to spend as much time as possible outside in nature the Attic offers a quiet indoor space to reflect and assimilate. It is also the home of a 4K cinema which some workshop hosts might want to use for presentations and workshops or if the mood takes a movie night.

Firepit

Gather and Connect in the Heart of the Garden

The Firepit is another gathering space situated in the main garden. It offers a place to come together and tell stories around the fire.

Fruit and Nut Forest

Nurturing Sustainable Food Sources in the Village

The endemic plant life is so vibrant that it will swamp many things that you try to grow. Fruit and nut trees and shrubs are good long term food sources so we have planted more than 200 fruit and nut trees throughout the village.

Forest

Surrounded by Ancient Forest and Wildlife

All around us there is ancient forest land. A beautiful mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees. The forest frames the village and is home to some of Europes apex animals – wolves bears and lynx.

Meadowland

A Haven for Rare Orchids and Butterflies

The Meadowland around Biokovina is second to none mostly because there is no use of chemicals in the ancient farming techniques practised in the village. Rare orchids abound – it’s a botanists paradise. But not to be left out there is a cornucopia of butterflys – a lepidopterists dream.

Communal Gardens

Green Spaces for Reflection and Relaxation

Whilst formal gardens are not our style we do have green spaces to retreat to and reflect upon and assimilate your experiences at Biokovina Wild.
