Biokovina Wild Construction

We have been very lucky to have wonderful people with a deep level of construction experience and skill have come to Biokovina Wild and helped us create wonderful spaces for our animals and guests. Several of these people have enjoyed their experience here so much that they decided to become part of our community.

Now they have come together to offer their services to new community members coming to Biokovina and to the local community. There is a shortage of designers / tradespeople and skilled construction workers in Bosnia and our team bring an international perspective to local construction techniques.

Construction Scope

Whilst we specialise in quirky custom construction we also have learned and understood the local building techniques. So we are capable of traditional local construction techniques and also more eco style construction. We welcome our clients input and do our best to make their dreams a reality.

We are happy to take on any project big or small. From making a new driveway to a bespoke design and build of a unique custom house and beyond.

The Toolshed

The traditional Barns in Bosnia are made with oak and as well as being full of character can last centuries. We had an idea to modernise and weatherproof these barns and use them for accommodation for the retreat center. But we wanted to do a test first so we built this tool shed using an ancient barn to test the principal.

“Stari Ambar” Conversion

This is our first attempt to sympathetically convert one of the traditional Bosnian oak barns into accommodation for the retreat center. It is situated close to Hazel Lodge and the end that faces down the valley has a full glass wall so you can lie in bed and take in the surroundings the forest around you and the spectacular view down the valley.

White Swallow Lodge

White swallow lodge was designed to be the heart of Biokovina Wild – the kitchen and dinning area and former communal / workshop area. It’s a flexible space situated on a large terrace with oversized windows offering spectacular views down the valley. White Swallow lodge also has one of our signature wild grass and meadow flower earthen roofs.

Hazel Lodge

Once the Biokovina Wild grew out of White Swallow Lodge we decided to situate a new Lodge on our land in the place with the most spectacular view. It’s a large open plan space that will also make use of oversized windows giving you the feeling that you are in nature even when inside the cozy well designed building.

Walnut Cottage

Walnut cottage is a great example of what we can do when we work with natural and traditional materials. The principal structural materials are stone and oak. A walnut inlaid floor and a silver birch mezzanine brings a custom rustic touch to the interior.

Mulberry Cottage

Mulberry cottage is an excellent example of the magic we can bring when converting pre-existing structures into new and more useful spaces. It was originally an old storage room and toolshed. We took the existing footprint and made it into a light and airy self contained home.
